After giving two back-to-back flops, the dimple-cheeked actor John Abraham speaks to exclusively to MM.com on his upcoming flick Force, about his experimenting with films, what it was like working with Nishikanth Kamath, his reaction to false stories and his lover boy image!
Your last two films (Aashayein and Jhootha Hi Sahi) did not do too well. What are your expectations with Force?

We’ve been smart enough to contain the budget of the film which is very important. If the film does well even on the first three days of its release, we are through. Tomorrow you may watch it and tell me that it did not do too well, I don’t know how a film will do. When I do a film, I put in a lot of hard work and am emotionally connected to that film. Films usually fail because of wrong promotions or because they are bad films. I am happy with the kind of job I did in those two films and I am proud of both the films.
Since Force is based on a Tamil film Kaakha Kaakha, how different is the treatment from the original?

The treatment is completely different as compared to the original one but we’ve taken the basic idea of the film that there is a ‘no nonsense’ cop who doesn’t believe in love, yet he falls in love with a girl and kills both the gangster and his brother, who kidnapped the girl. There is a linear storyline but no actual similarity except the romantic bit.

There have been many cop-based films in the recent past. How different is this one?

I play the role of ACP Yashvardhan, a cop in plain clothes. He’s a narcotic bureau cop and not the typical cop. He believes in real raw action something which Sunny Deol had in Dacait, Ghayal and Arjun Pandit.
You go out an out to promote your films. Please comment.

I do sensible films, at least I believe so. Force is a sensible film and needs to be promoted righty. Promotions play a very important role today. You may have gone to watch ten films and might have not liked at least nine out of them because people do go to watch a film because of its hype.
How was the working experience with Nishikant Kamath?

Nishikanth (Kamath) is known to be a critical director rather than a commercial director. I think we both have done an experiment with this film. My solo films are usually experimental films and Nishikanth’s films are non-commercial films and we got together and decided to make a commercial film and that’s an experiment in itself. We’ve done a great job and the film looks great.

Would you agree that you’ve tasted success more with commercial films?

I know for a fact that films like Desi Boyz and Housefull 2 will be runaway hits. I know these are commercial films and a lot of people tell me that I’ve got the face and the body to be a commercial actor. But I think it’s sometimes good to experiment. I still think No Smoking is one of my most favorite films and will always be a cult film.

How do you react to criticism and rumours being printed about you?

Sometimes it’s done for publicity or publicity towards the film but I don’t react to it anymore. It does affect me but I just decide to be responsible when I speak and make sure that my words are not misconstrued. When I read something that I haven’t even said, I take it with a pinch of salt.

You have being linked with many women especially after becoming single. How are you taking that?

You think I am linked-up? I don’t think so. I don’t even like to have such an image. I am concerned about the person in me as I am a stable guy. Honestly, I’ve been very conservative and I like long and stable relationships. I like the idea of marriage. So link-ups don’t really help my case. I think women find stable men much more attractive and hope that’s the reason why women find me attractive.

Are you looking for love at the present?

No, I am not.
